About two years ago, ISN (Intel Software Network) made a strategic shift to become more transparent and shift control to you (user). At that time it was a BIG change for Intel (& I argue that it still is).

Imagine Intel engineers having their own blogs!!
Imagine letting you have direct conversations on our community!!
Imagine letting you have your own blog!!
Imagine publishing articles written by you!!
Oh well .. Imagine actually listening to you!!

In the past, nothing was said on the external website without going through multiple reviews including a legal review, let alone publishing something written by a external user without much scrutiny. We have changed that and we continue to break other barriers.

We really like to increase your participation on the community and make you feel that you own this community as much as we do. To build communities, we put "web 2.0" capabilities such as blogs/ videos / RSS / exciting contests, etc. on ISN. We also continue to push for transparency, giving up control, and getting you to participate on the community.

Are we successful at it? Our metrics says that we are consistently growing , and you continue to participate through your comments and discussions. But, honestly we really don't know if we are successful. And, we know for sure that we have a lot of work to do.

To help us better understand your needs, we’ve engaged OnSurvey, Inc., a third-party, independent market research firm. Our intention is to be completely transparent with this process so that you will be able to express your thoughts/opinions freely. We will also be reporting back to you on our findings later this summer.

OnSurvey will be conducting 2 online virtual focus groups in a few weeks. They will be tentatively held on Wednesday, July 30 (7 to 8 p.m. EST) and Wednesday, August 6 (7 to 8 p.m.).

As a token of our appreciation, each participant will receive a $75 gift certificate from Amazon.com. We will be selecting the focused participants based on the comments on this blog post answering ANY ONE of the following questions:

Why do you visit ISN? What ISN features you like/dislike?

Do you feel your voice is being heard by Intel? Yes/No & How/Why?

What other online communities you are actively participating in and why?

OnSurvey will be contacting individuals later in July with details. Space is limited so I encourage you to volunteer by leaving a comment on this post as soon as possible. Thank you and appreciate your continued participation on ISN.

Please welcome Maria Camila Gomez to the manageability blogs. She works for Aranda Software Corporation an Independent Software Vendor. In her blog, she plans to share Aranda’s experience in integrating Intel AMT into its product suite.

In her first blog post, Maria writes "I won't lie… at the beginning I was afraid, I was petrified (sounds like a song), AMT seems to be difficult.". Thanks for letting us know the first impressions with our technology. I admit that we have some work to do in making it real easy for people to understand and use Intel AMT.

Your blog truly reflects what we want this community to be. I want you to know that your views is really important for our success. Thank you Maria.

Here is how you can make your voice heard too!

Please help us amplify your voice by expressing your opinions freely, and participating in our discussions .

Leave a comment. People spend time and effort writing blog posts hoping that the community finds it helpful. Bloggers are always looking for feedback-- the good, the bad or any suggestions you may have to make their blog posts more interactive. What’s your reaction to a blog post? Let us know! Add a comment, and start a discussion.

Ask a question. Stumped by a technical issue? Curious how others are resolving the issue? Participate in the developer discussion forum. Interact with developers and other ISVs from around the world.

Share your ideas. Does your new product include an elegant solution to a problem you’d like to share? Tell the community about it in a forum, and get others’ reaction.

Become a blogger. Do you have a lot to say about vPro technology or Intel AMT or something else of interest to the community? Start your own blog as Maria Camila Gomez has done and get people talking! You can start by leaving a comment on this post or send me an email. Thanks Maria for leading the way.

Contribute a technical article. If you have written a technical article that you’d like to share, send it to ajay.mungara (@) intel.com, and I will post it for others to use.

Manageability developer community only exist because of members like you contributing ideas, questions, and comments, so add your voice today. If you have something to say, we want to hear it!

About a year ago, I blogged about onStar Service for PCs and geek squads will soon become a thing of the past. I am very happy to inform you that the technology that can make some of these concepts a reality is coming soon. Although, I should point out that all the features I discuss in the above blog posts may not be immediately available, but the technology is surely evolving and heading in that direction.

In this video, Kevin Unbedacht, Director of Strategic Alliance - Symantec Corporation, talks about the future directions of Intel vPro Technology. Kevin talks about upcoming features like client initiated remote access & hardware encryption for the hard disk drives. Can you take advantage of this technology? Yes, the next version of the Intel AMT SDK includes features discussed in this video will be made available on the manageability developer community very soon.

If you are serious about taking advantage of this technology in your manageability application then do let me know, and there is a chance that I may be able to get you access to the new version of Intel AMT SDK before it is made public on the website.

I am really sorry!! I was asked to take this video down temporarily (& I refused to take down this blog post). I will make the video available as soon as I am allowed to do so.

Ajith Illendula, Application Engineer supporting Intel Active Management Technology (Intel AMT), demonstrated the IDE-Redirect feature of Intel AMT. IDE-Redirect allows an Intel AMT enabled system to boot from an OS image, floppy, CD or a DVD device. In this video Ajith talks about how to remotely boot a system and redirect the local IDE drives to a remote image. Ajith uses the "Remote Control" sample (this sample is part of the Intel AMT SDK download) to demonstrate the IDE-Redirect feature and shows all the relevant APIs needed to build this feature into a management application.

In my opinion, IDE-Redirect is a very helpful feature of Intel AMT. With this feature an administrator can reboot the machine on to a redirected disk or a CD ROM Drive. For example: If the remote desktop machine becomes completely inoperable then the administrator can reboot the machine into a recovery OS , enables device redirection as it boots up before going into the operation system. Once the machine is booted with the recovery OS then the administrator can transfer any diagnostic/repair tools and fix the inoperable machine. Without IDE-Redirect feature means a desk side visit by the IT administrator along with a set of utilitiy disks or CD's to fix this problem.

I also think there exists a great opportunity to innovate and build really cool applications using this feature. For instance, In this blog post Ylian talks about experimenting with IDE-Redirect over the internet. And, I came across this document by SyAM Software describing the IDE-Redirect feature and how they have implemented this feature into their management application. I really like to know if you or your company implemented this feature into the management application.

Yesterday, I was invited as a guest speaker to the Open Port Radio- Blog Talk radio show to chat about Manageability Developer Community. I really enjoyed the interaction with the hosts Josh Hilliker, Russ Pam and Jeff Torello from the the Intel vPro Expert Center. Intel vPro Expert Center is a community focused on Integration, Activation and Deployment of Intel Active Management Technology (Intel AMT). I strongly encourage the ISVs with ready-to-market manageability applications to participate in the vPro Expert Center for integration & deployment related discussions. In the radio show, I responded to questions such as, a) target audience for the developer community b) similarities, differences and collaboration opportunities between the vPro Expert Center and the developer community c) ISVs currently using the developer community, etc.

You can listen to the archived radio show either on the blog talk radio website or download & listen to the mp3 file. I was also told that Open Port Radio is inviting some really cool guest speakers to their future shows, so do look for shows that may interest you.

To be real honest, I actually don't like when somebody asks questions like this "what programming languages do you use?" or worst "What programming language is right for me?". What annoys me the most is when this question does not come with any background information. It is like asking someone what is your preferred mode of transportation. The answer is "it depends" - do I enjoy driving my car? Sure, I do. But, do I prefer to drive my car from New York to LA? Not really. Lot of factors can influence your decision on the mode of transportation, like the cost, time, and distance, among other things. I am sure that your decision to use a particular programming language for Intel AMT development has been influenced by a multitude of factors and I am not about to judge your programming language choices.

I am only interested to understand the programming language you are using in order to influence our engineers to provide sample code in the programming language you prefer. You might have also noticed that the "RDK - Reference Design Kit" - a Java sample application and source code - has not been updated recently and I am about to *yank* this tool from the community. The reason is simple, it is hard to justify the continued development and support of this tool when some of the engineers are convinced that a C++ and/or C# sample is all we need to cover the majority of the Intel AMT developers. And, I can only push for Java samples to be developed with your help. Please do respond to this blog post or take a minute to respond to the *poll* we have created on the manageability developer community home page.
Question: What programming language do you use with Intel AMT?
Poll Options:

C/C++

C#

Java

Scripting Language

Other

Also, please do let me know if you particularly think a "Java" based sample application similar to "DTK - Developer Tool Kit" can really help with your Intel AMT development efforts.

Video of Ajith Illendula, application engineer working on Intel AMT, talking about what he works on. The video was shot in Ajith’s office located in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. He supports and enables developers writing Intel AMT enabled applications in the Manageability Developer Community Forum.

The purpose of this video is to introduce the "Human Element" of Intel. Many of the engineers who work really hard in making the Intel technology "Real" are often buried somewhere in the organization and often we forget that Intel is made up of thousands of Individuals like Ajith. The idea is to introduce the real Intel employees in their work environment. My goal is to bring engineers like Ajith to the forefront and help the community understand who these people really are. Next time you see Ajith respond to your question in the manageability forum you know who he is, how his office looks like and what his personal interests are.
