Constant learner, enthusiastic teacher...skier, cyclist, chef, fly caster, volunteer, Orangeman, investor, media junkie and beer drinking party guy. Drop me a line at: aaron.c.tersteeg at the domain intel.com. I launched the mobile software development community in the summer of 2006 and am now the community manager for Threading for Multi-Core. In my current role my focus is software development evangelist and geek blogger. Started as a mechanical engineer (oil pump design didn't do it for me), moved on to Information Resource Management, worked as a Business Process Consultant, Fortune 500 Webmaster, Web Application Development VP of Sales and Marketing, Data Center Product Management and now Software Development. My wife likes to tell people at parties that I blog for a living. It is much more than that but it lets me share my ideas and hear what developers have to say. |

It facilities a centralized process for licensing, managing and updating the deployment [...]
Many of you have probably been reading Clay Breshears blog on Parallel Programming. We thought that you would be interested in learning more about Clay’s role within Intel and what he spends most of his time doing when he is not blogging on the Intel Software Network. During a recent conference we both sat down [...]

I took my video camera to the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco last week. I shot many demo videos and expect to post as I get them edited. Here is the first video. Darren Yee, Tech Marketing Engineer Intel Software Solutions Group, presents a threading optimization demo comparing Adobe Premier running on a 2 Core [...]
When I first heard about Adobe Apollo (now called Adobe Integrated Runtime or AIR) my first impression was "Yet another Virtual Machine?" Can Adobe over take Java this late in the development cycle? They must be crazy. But you have to give Adobe credit for being brash and they do have a great track record [...]
James Reinders is currently presenting at the Intel Developer Forum Press Day. He just announced the launch of What If to the Press. The site is currently hosting three software projects. Integrated Debugger for Java*/JNI Environments Intel® Performance Tuning Utility 2.0 Intel® C++ STM Compiler, Prototype Edition We have been working on this site for a few months and [...]
A few posts ago I posed the question "What if Intel shared ideas and prototypes early in the development cycle?" to share some of the thoughs that we were having within our team. Internal to Intel Software we all knew about some great projects in the works. But sometime the development cycle can be long and [...]
We had some off topic comments posted on the Multi-Core site today. Should we take some of them down, all of them down or keep them up?
Mobile continues to be a hot topic and was intensely discussed at Mashup Camp. With the continued stream of new hand held connected devices hitting the market every month many software and services provides are looking for killer app to grab the attention of consumers. I participated in a un-conference session to talk to software developers [...]
I attended my third Mashup Camp in Mt. View last week. My motivation was to meet more of the developers on the cutting edge of new software development and get to know them on a one on one basis. Mashup camp is the best conference that I've attended where everyone is on an even footing. If [...]
I've been reading a few blog posts and articles about Linux for Mobile. I even installed Ubuntu on my Mac to give it a test drive for my self. But for the most part I have not seen a lot of evidence that the Linux OSs have been optimized to run as well as the [...]
The Intel Software Network team is a pretty fluid organization. People take on new roles and responsibilities based on business requirements and cover for each other while on sabbatical. I've been working on all kinds of developer community projects the past few months. I have had the opportunity to meet and interact with a wide [...]
I was reading Doug's post about Virtualization and it got me thinking. I'm concerned about the stance that some software companies are taking in regards to Virtualization. The MS Vista license does not let your virtualize the basic version of the OS and Apple does not let the user virtuize any version of their operating [...]
I'm at Apple WWDC 07 this week in San Francisco. I've been learning a lot of cool new things but Apple keeps a pretty tight lid on what they tell the developer community with an NDA so no update from me on Leopard, Xcode or iPhone. But there are PLENTY of online sources out there [...]
What would be the risks? What would be the rewards? Barriers? Enablers? I've been talking with a few of my peers here in the Software Solutions Groups about some of the amazing software tools, ideas and product that we are working on right now. As an employee that works to market tools like the Web 2.0 [...]
I was very excited to see that Gizmodo posted a few images of a new prototype super thin laptop form factor. The Intel Mobile Metro Notebook is shown with a leather case leads me to think that it will be marketed just like a fashionable cellphone. At .7 inches think and just 2.25 pound. It [...]
Designing a good web site is no longer about building a design layout in photoshop and handing it off to the engineering team. The team roles are no longer narrowly defined as "designer", "writer" and "programmer". You can not control the way that people consume the content that you post to your web site. These are [...]
I think that I'm the least popular demographic for the cable TV companies. I really enjoy going to the movie theater for the comfortable chairs, high quality sound and big picture. I don't see the return on investment in a big screen TV since I can go see over 300 movies for the cost of an [...]
The Intel team is getting very excited about the new mobile platforms that are about to launch this spring. We've been talking about how the configuration can be extended and use cases. I'm excited about the game market and how consumer will use the platforms. There has been a lot of buzz in the market [...]
I read today that Microsoft has issued 12 bulletins with patches for at least 20 vulnerabilities. Six of the 12 bulletins are rated "critical." I'm sure that most of them are security related and the second Tuesday of every month is Patch Tuesday (even before Vista). But some of them might be related to compatiablity [...]
You really don't know how good being mobile is until it's gone. I recently installed updater software on both my PC and Mac that both resulted in me loosing wireless connectivity to my Dlink DI-624 base station. I've had the base station for a few years and thought that maybe it did not support the new [...]
I'm back in Oregon from spending a week is Boston at Mashup Camp and Mashup University. Both events had a common theme but it was Mashup Camp that was the real focus for me during the week. Mashup University is more corporate focused and consists of two days of mostly non-stop presentation by the big [...]
We are wrapping up the two day Mashup University and looking forward to tomorrow Mashup Camp 3. MIT is hosting the University part and have challenged the group with two FutureBOSTON mashup competitions with a $500 bounty for each. The first is Innovation Landscape which is focused on visulaizing the economic performance data. The second is called [...]
Mashup Camp 3 is going to be held in Boston next week. It's a pretty sweet configuration and I'm [...]
We all have a certain place where we do our "not at the job" work. Maybe it's an overstuffed couch, the kitchen table, the corner table at the local coffee house or in a parked car between meetings but I would suspect that most of us work at our home office when we are not [...]
I think that we are far enough along with our newest software tool development project to give the developer community a heads up. C.V., Clayne and I are working on a new Platform/Context Awareness API for JavaScript were calling the Intel Web 2.0 TDK. We're not yet ready to share with the world but are [...]
I'm excited about a new community event occurring in the mobile developer community. Last week we launched the mobile mod challenge. The whole idea was to create an outlet for developers to share their ideas for what the mobile software future holds. I've been keeping an eye on the entries and have been pretty impressed [...]
Intel is working very diligently to enable software to runon mobile platforms. We have been very focused on the concepts surroundingmobilized software. It is the idea that mobile software is platform aware, forexample it knows you have a battery, whether you are connected to a wall plug, the status of your charge or if your are [...]
I picked up one of the new BlackBerry 8100 Pearl last month, so that I can claim that I bought it when the CPU was still an Intel chip. Intel just sold the xScale business Marvell Technlogy Group. I was in sales for many years and got hooked on the BlackBerry way. I've been playing [...]
I'm heading to Las Vegas next week for the Mobile Connectionsconference. I'll be the medium tall guy with the video camera. If you have someideas on developing software for Ultra Mobile and Centrino devices or commentson the development community then drop me a line at Aaron.C.Tersteeg(at)Intel dotcom so that we can arrange to meet.
I hope that you all got a chance to watch the video that Josh Bancroft shot of me in my cube last week. I'm not a big fan of listen to my voice or watching my self talk. But the video turned out pretty good and I did not put my foot in my mouth [...]
Quick update about a few exciting things going on with Mobile Software at Intel. Shawn Casey has just built the Intel Location Tool Bar for Internet Explorer that utilizes Intel's location based technology. I've downloaded and installed on my laptop but have not yet talked to Shawn about all the details. As soon as I get [...]
Software development for Ultra Mobile devices is going tobe critical to this product segments adoption. One example of a company that ismaking good headway is StreetDeck. They specialize in making software that provides the in-car user interface that runs over Windows*. Robert Wray, the companies CEO, explained that, "StreetDeck provides the touch interface for the [...]
Intel and Volkswagen have been working on standards basedcommunications that let devices like the Ultra Mobile device interactseamlessly with cars. Wireless connections between the Ultra Mobile devices andthe car's video display system let the driver receive point of interestinformation to the dashboard display, accessing streaming media from theinternet via a ClearWire WiMax connection and listen [...]
I took a video camera to the Intel Developer Forum this year to shoot some footage for the Mobile Developer Community and I'm currently edited it down for the site but I wanted to share a few links to photos, videos and thought from other sites. First, there is the mother load on Intel's web site [...]
To continue my recap of the Intel Developer Forum I'll give you the highlight of what Intel is working on for 2007. We are scheduled to deliver the next generation Ultra Mobile devices in the first half 2007 and many executives and engineers discussed the plans with the developer community. Paul Otellini said that next year [...]
I've been working on a magazine article on Intel's Ultra Mobile devices the past few days. I've spent a lot of time reading and talking to experts about the killer applications for Ultra Mobile and have come to some pretty interesting conclusions. Mobile device companies have given the world access to digital information on the go [...]
What do you see as the opportunity and limitations for Ultra Mobile devices? I've been spending a lot of time learning about Ultra Mobile Computing. The question that I'm still working to address is "Where is the line that defines when a mobile devices becomes ultra mobile?" The two groups that know the most about Ultra [...]
I have been working to identify thought leaders in the mobile software development community who are passionate about technology. We launched the Laptop Gaming TDK a few weeks ago. It's a good product... but does being good make it a must have? Is it helpful, you bet! Is it revolutionary? Not really. To be revolutionary we [...]
Forthe past few weeks I have been working with the team on getting the word outabout Intel's new Laptop Gaming Technical Development Kit (TDK). The new TDKprovides royalty free, easy to integrate code for the game software developers.I have seen some great demos of the tool in action and we posted a video ofHalf Life [...]
As the Mobile Developer Community manager I was invited by the team to attend the Apple WWDC06. Caught up in the euphoria of my new Mac I jumped on the opportunity; naively thinking that I'd go and share all that I learned on this blog; Steve's keynote, photos, demos, conversations with developers and the creative [...]
The recent Apple WDC in SF had mewaxing nostalgic about how computers have influenced my life. Where did it allstart? My first experience with a computer was printing text banners on a printterminal for a VAX" I recall typing in my name and then having the computerprint out 10 inch letter made up of hundreds [...]
This is a bit of an Intel plug more consumer oriented but I thought that this is worth sharing... We're all consumers as well. :) I was recently sent a link for two clever Intel promotionalvideos on YouTube: Helicopter Movie & Car Chase Movie. They use Machinimato poke fun at how some platforms don't deliver the [...]
Over the weekend I was thinking about how best to serve the mobile software development community and ensure that Intel is really listening to the needs of the developers. I've been on the fence about openly sharing my email address since we started the project. We all get too much email and I've had issues [...]
Wednesday July 12th was the first official day of Mashup Camp. The un-conference kicked off with a big open schedule with noevents listed. For the 490 people sitting in the room this was not a big deal. They knew that in 30min the schedule would be filled and the ideas ready to roll. The microphones were [...]
What I learned at Mashup Camp " Part 1 I spent most of last week at Mashup Camp in Mt.View at the Computer History Museum. The first twodays were Mashup University. An introduction into whatsponsoring companies are doing to establish framework and platform leadershipin the market. Intel, Adobe, Microsoft , AOL and others have brand awareness [...]
Hello World: it sounds a bit cliché and is probably the most over-used opening statement for technology but it is how we need to think - BIG. Let me introduce myself and share a little bit of what I have been up to the past few months. My name is Aaron Tersteeg and I'm the [...]
