Working at Intel it takes a little more before I say "WOW" about a technology, however today we announced that Intel codename SkullTrail is now simply known as the Intel Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform. Central to this platform is the Intel® Desktop Board D5400XS which supports two processors providing upto eight processing cores along with support for four high-end graphics cards.

As someone who uses virtualization for software engineering, two Intel® Core™2 Extreme processors with eight cores supported by 8Gb of memory is the main reason for my personal "WOW" although the technology is really aimed entirely at gamers who want to run eight cores along with four high-end graphics cards such as the NVIDIA 8800. Along with virtualization however, I use Microsoft's Flight Simulator X as a training tool for flying in the real world and I could really see how such a system would make Microsoft's Flight Simulator X come alive. It will be sometime before I'll personally be upgrading my system but it is an impressive insight to what you'll find within desktops and workstations very soon.

So where do we get this great motherboard? From what I can see, it's out-of-stock everywhere. Is Intel having a supply issue? What was the official release date of this board?

It's up to 16GB memory total, and not limit to Intel QX9775. Check supported processors at "http://processormatch.intel.com/CompDB/SearchResult.aspx?Boardname=d5400xs". It's good for simulation programs under Linux that needs more thatn 8GB memory.
Check the price for DDR3-1333 ECC (Intel DX38BT) and DDRF2-800 FBDIMM (for i5400 chipset server & workstation, also this "desktop" motherboard D5400XS), same 1600 FSb with dual or quad SLI-ready graphics performacne.
It's worthy of a wait till more 45nm with 1600 FSB processors after 2Q '08 - for both Intel DX38BT & D5400XS motherboards. And, more information about "no limit for overclocking" that no too many memory choices available at this time. It's hard to make a decision for serious CAD/CAM users now.

It's now been a month since launch and aside from the initial batch (which amounted to a mere handful of boards), this board is completely out of stock everywhere, with ETAs often extending into April. I have been eagerly looking forward to this platform and this board for quite some time and find myself getting more and more upset with each passing day that it remains unavailable. The processors, on the other hand, are very available from multiple vendors. Why has this board been delayed?!?

TOUGH GETTING HS MEMORY. THE BEST I COULD COME UP WITH IS "4GB800FBKIT" (800MHZ ) LOCATED ON "MEMORYSUPPLIES.COM" WEB SITE.
MEMORY IS USED BY "APPLE MAC PRO". I DON'T KNOW IF THIS MEMORY WILL WORK IN THE INTEL "D5400SX. ANY FEED BACK

I personally am a software engineer in Intel and don't work directly with the team that built this board, especially with the folks that manage supply numbers.
I can say though, with some confidence, that Intel would not spend the R&D budget to build this board and then not fill the supply chain to meet demand. Be patient and I'm sure these boards will be available soon!!!

i had some problems installing all the above boards on this mb! my graphic's card covered up some important headers and a pwr. supply connection. i made some extension cables up and brought them out to make the connections. i am typing this report on my new super gamer. note: that you have to use the 775 heat sink's for this mother board and not the 771's that intel keeps saying will fit.

Looks great, but waiting on ddr3 and pcie 2.0. How much longer do I have to wait?

Seem to be too compromised solution:
- 1. Four PCIe x16 but only 2 may be used in SLI - NVIDIA demands full NVIDIA hardware link - not as on this one. Really one x16 link might be used for up to 4 cards (either NVIDIA or AMD/ATI) - they really need only power, not bandwidth (even 3 x NVIDIA 280GTX in SLI3 utilis nor more than x14 v.1 connection!)
- 2. Using NVIDIA NForce 100 SLI chip as a second "bus multiplyer" is no good - the chip is quite "fishy", I am quite sure those ports may not really support 2 x PCIe x16 cards at full speed - any other non-blocking switch would perform better.
- 3. Might be good for gamers, but not that good as a workstation board - eATX form factor does not allow serious expantion
Think the chipset needs "20 slots server board" form-factor, only then all its potential may be disclosed
