There is a hack! (for Second Life and the Intel 965 Chipset)

By Gael Holmes (Intel) (55 posts) on November 29, 2007 at 10:35 am

There are hacks for everything, right? Well I have this brand new HP 6910p with the Intel 965 Express chipset running Vista and I could not get onto Second Life. Everytime I tried to connect, it would ask me if I wanted music and then it would crash. Well I thought, maybe my HP doesn't like music. Anyway there is another Blog that I have been following and it appeared that all of us with this chipset would be terminally barred from Second Life (it's a blog with lots of comments!)

I checked this blog last night and now it appears they know it is a problem in Open_GL and there is a setting you can add to your "settings.xml" file that seems to work (I just tried it and I'm "in World" now.) There is also a Second life Forum Thread pertaining to this fix too - click HERE to read through it.

Here is the "hack":

Find the "user_settings" folder under your Second Life folder that is under AppData or Applications Data. (It may be different whether you have XP or Vista. Also on one of my systems this file is under .../Roaming/Second Life/user_settings/ ) Note also you will have a folder with your Avatar's name. Don't change the settings.xml file in that folder - change the one in the user_settings folder.

If you can't find this file, it may be hidden so go into your Folder Options and "Show hidden files."

Here are some other useful links as well: Second Life Wiki and Reducing Lag with Client Settings.

For more information on this hack - see the forum posting and blog that are included in this posting.

Next ... can anyone find a FAQ that explains the settings in this file? No telling what it might be possible to f... errr, tweak.

By the way, this tweak also works for the CSI OpenRez version of this viewer.

There are general problems with the object-object occlusion code. On my system (Intel Core 2 Duo, NVidia 7600, XP), turrning off O-OO stops a memory leak -- Task Manager shows memory of SL growing rather quickly (most notable after an hour of SL'ing) and turning off O-OO stops the growth immediately. It could be that whoever added the O-OO code to SL, didn't get the implementation totally correct.

Have tried this hack, as well as various 'fixes' for dual-core machines and nothing seems to work. Have a brand new HP Compaq 6910p Dual-Core with the mobile 965 express chipset .. and it looks as if my second-life is ending

By bandy bracken on December 7th, 2007 at 11:23 am
... oh yes .. running XP professional

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on December 7th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
Brandy - which settings.xml file did you add the lines to? There are two. Make sure you did not chang the one that is under your Avatar folder's name. (I have your exact notebook and the hack worked for me.) In fact this was the only thing I had to do to get it to work. However when I first changed the wrong settings.xml file, it did not fix it.

You might go into preferences before you try to connect and see if you need to lessen your graphics requirements.

By bandy bracken on December 9th, 2007 at 7:47 am
Added to the correct Settings file ... preferences at minimums ...

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on December 9th, 2007 at 9:29 am
Very puzzling.. I suppose at this point I would make sure you have the latest SL software loaded and the latest drivers for your video card. And if that did not work, I'd start googling like crazy!

By bandy bracken on December 10th, 2007 at 11:21 am
Went to the Intel Page for the drivers ... and there was none for the Intel 965 mobile on XP ... been googling ... HELP!!!!

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on December 10th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
I would think you would go to your OEM (HP) for drivers. But I'm still puzzled as to why the hack did not work (IF you have the right drivers.) Could it be possible that you have tried so many things that maybe your system has conflicts due to various other changes that you have made? I think if it were my system I'd try to go back to a date before I started trying things (get back to a "clean" system") and then try the hack again. I would even uninstall 2nd life and start clean.

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on December 10th, 2007 at 8:28 pm
The HP website http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareInd.....nvOID=1093
has graphics drivers for the ATI Graphics as well as the intel 965 GM graphics drivers. I'm curious, though - did your HP 6910 come with Windows XP installed or did you install it? I'm wondering if your problem has to do with XP and how it is interacting with the drivers because our HP systems all came with Vista and the Hack worked like a charm on our systems.

By Mal Burns on December 11th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
The hack worked fine for a while but the problem now seems to be the new "Windlight" SL client which will not allow occlusion o be set to false. It seems to simply generate a new settings.xml file and then runs as a new install.

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on December 19th, 2007 at 9:54 am
Did you look in the "roaming" folder under AppData? (or Applications Data?) I would send your question to the SL support site. You could do a search for that file and see if it's out there at all. Also, what version of SL are you trying to run? AND make sure you have gone out to your OEM's website to make sure you have the most recent graphics driver installed on your system.

By Brad O. on December 19th, 2007 at 4:58 pm
Updated the graphics card, can't find any folder named "roaming" and can't find the settings.xml file.......I'll try sl support, but i believe they could careless about unsupported users......

On the folder \Users\myname\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.xml, I managed to get the page up but was unable to edit to add the lines (hack) suggested. Can anyone tell me how to add (type) the lines in?

So near and yet so far!

Thanks

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on January 24th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Did you just double click on it? I think that since it is an xml file you actually have to right click and then select "Open" (or is it Edit) and select "Wordpad" or "Notepad". Also make sure it doesn't have the "Read Only" set in its properties.

Applied the "fix" but each time you start SL the file is over-written and bang goes my change... Not managed to see if it was a one-time fix because I'm behind a firewall at the moment...

Any tips?

By pumbie on January 29th, 2008 at 6:52 am
Further testing shows this file gets written each time SL is exited, and the hack is removed :-(

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on January 29th, 2008 at 7:36 am
Did you by any chance install the "Wind Light Viewer?" apparently this version does over-write the xml file. You might try uninstalling it and just using the regular SL client?

By pumbie on January 29th, 2008 at 8:54 am
No. First machine I tried was an unknown state XP SP2; so I built a new Vista RTM, applied all current updates, downloaded and installed the SL client 1.18.5 (3), then tried the hack. Nothing else installed. Thanks for helping.

I thought I was going to have to change laptops after I switched to a Sony (why do they put a **** chip like the 965 in when they're supposed to be known for quality???) - it was the one fly in the ointment with the PC. Looks like it got a reprieve ;)

Thanks again

err.. I found this page for a friend who has "Dell Inspiron 1525, Vista, Intel Mobile 965 Express"
Now my prob: checking the file on my system, there aren't even the lines included that should help manage it.

I myself wanted to get off the lousy mem lagg, my friend can't even play SL with her new notebook

By Mark on February 29th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
The frustration continues to build. Compaq 6510b - Intel Mobile 965 Express - XP Service Pack 2. There is no "Roaming" folder on my computer after installing WindLight First Look 1.19.0.80044 and SecondLife v 1.19.04 (separately of course). As I was writing this I went back to my file and SecondLife site and discovered v1.19.05 was released hours ago....but unfortunately by driver is out of date or unsupported and there still is not systems.xml file or Roaming folder.
Any suggestions??

By Gael on February 29th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Those folders are hidden on some people's systems - you may want to see if you can "unhide" them.

By Daniel on February 29th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Same Problem here: Intel Mobile 965 Express - XP Service Pack 2.

And: driver is out of date or unsupported

-> but with a older version sl run ... thats about 4 months ago :(

By Mark on February 29th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Gael - I have my folder settings to show hidden folders and files. Could I perhaps be missing something?
I have been looking in C:\Documents and Settings\-myname-\Application Data\Second Life\user_settings
Other folders in Second Life are browswer_profile, cache and logs. No Roaming in my Application Data folder or in the other App Data folders (some of which have dimmed icon, indicating they are 'hidden;)

By Mark on February 29th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Daniel - are you saying an older version of SL currently runs now?

One think I tried was updating the video driver from HP's website (and restarting) but when I go to properties, it still reads as version 6.14.10.4831. Should be a version in the 8.

Do other users have the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family listed twice under the display adapters in the Device Manager??

Also, I have never run SL on this machine (only installed) so would that be a reason the user_settings folder is blank?

By Daniel on March 1st, 2008 at 10:27 am
No, but i already played SL at my Laptop some months ago. Now with the newes version i get the error message "driver is out of date or unsupported"

:-(

By Mark on March 2nd, 2008 at 6:59 am
Daniel do you know what version it was?
It is clear SL lists Intel 945 as compatible but they also say "Intel chipsets less than a 945 including Intel Extreme" are NOT compatible.
Does anyone know if there is any way to uninstall my 965 and install a 945?

By Mark on March 5th, 2008 at 9:47 am
This is becoming a part-time job I don't get paid for. I installed and ran SL on my desktop and then copied the entire 200 MB App Data folder (with the settings.xml file). I then did a fresh install of second life and attempted to run it on my HP Compaq 6510b with XP Service Pack 2 which failed. I then manually added the Settings folder from the successful SL desktop install and run, restarted and attempted to fire up SL. Failure. I also tried this with Windlight and deleting the entire SL App Data Folder and replacing it with the successful Desktop copied App Data. Failure.

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on March 5th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I'm not sure what is special about your 965 system. The hack worked on mine (after I updated the graphics driver.) I have heard conflicting things about the Windlight viewer - it seems to work great for some and not at all for others. I have added links to my original blog that might help you figure things out.

By Mark on March 6th, 2008 at 3:22 am
Thanks Gael - one think I do notice is that I have the 965 Chipset listed twice when I go to Device Manager.
Also is there any way to change my chipset - I have some install software for Nvidia cards....

By Trevotillo on March 14th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Your chip set comes in the form of a "chip" soldered onto the board. While it is *theoretically* possible to swap it out (to one who has immense experience, knowledge, coordination, and ability), I personally would just call it a big NO. The only way to upgrade your chip set realistically would be with a new board, assuming that HP stocks them, and it doesn't cost less to just buy the whole system new without monkeying with it. No magic cure for you today, darn it. :(
I do wonder a bit about the dual-listing of the chip set...one set of drivers might be redundant and conflicting...although typically the "false copy" is just useless, rather than getting in the way (at least in most less-complex devices I'm familiar with). It might be possible that that is the problem, but I'm going to leave the call on that to the real experts. You'd have to be certain you were removing the right one (or wrong one, rather), or face the consequences...which would leave you worse off than you are now unless you're knowledgeable and prepared.
So, after all that talk, it boils down to: "Not sure, ask Gael." :D Not sure why I bothered, but who knows? Could help...somehow.

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on March 15th, 2008 at 10:49 am
I agree with Trevotillo - I meant to respond sooner. Having the 965 Chipset listed twice in your Device manager can't be a good thing. I think that in your efforts to get SL working you must have tweaked your system to the point of needing to take it in somewhere. I think if it were my system I would start contacting your OEM and getting some technical advice.

By Mark on March 16th, 2008 at 4:23 am
Thanks Gael and Trevotillo. I'm going to have to contact tech support at my work (this is a work laptop).

By Mark on March 19th, 2008 at 5:53 am
I disabled the 965 Chipset listed second and I lost my ability to operate on 2 monitors. I re-activated and my dual-monitor display came back. I always thought this feature was controlled with the plug-and-plays within "Monitor" in the Device Manger.

I still can't run SL on my brand new Notebook with a Intel Mobile 965 Express Chipset. The hack in NOT working at all because SL never worked on this machine so there is no setting.xml yet. I get an error message BEFORE it is possible to log in to the world. What can I do? From where do all those people get the settings.xml file on their machine, even if they can't run SL? THANKS for your help... I want to go back to SECOND LIFE!!!

By Gael Holmes (Intel) on March 28th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
I was never able to run SL on my system before the hack either (hence the hack!) Did you read through my whole blog? It works for 97% of the people so I have to wonder about your situation. Do you need to "show hidden files" on your system? (the blog makes sure to let you know that this file could be hidden...) The settings.xml file is part of the installation - maybe it wouldn't hurt to uninstall what you have and reinstall it? Are you displaying file extensions? Perhaps you are seeing a "settings" file? Have you found the "user_settings" folder that is inside the Second Life folder? You may not have a "Roaming" folder but given the path in the blog, you should be able to locate where the user_settings folder is. Settings.xml should be there whether you have successfully gotten onto SL or not.

By Disappointed SL-User on March 28th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Thanks Gael Holmes for the fast answer. I uninstalled everything related to Second Life and downloaded the newest version. I installed it and started SL immediately. The situation is still the same: there are no files yet in the user_settings folder. It's no problem to find it. And of course there is also NO folder with my avatars name, since I could never actualy log in on this notebook. I work with a Fujitsu-Siemens LIFEBOOK E8310 with a Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family, Windows XP, Resolution 1400x1050. I have the driver 6.14.10.4785 - on the Webpage of Fujutsu-Siemens they don't have a newer one available. Before I can log in or something I just get the message, that "Second Life is unable to run because your video card drivers are out of date or unsupported. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers installed. If you continue to receive this message, contact customer service". Are there any changes I can do with the card? What am I doing wrong? THANKS

I do experience another strange thing with the Intel Mobile 965 Express Chipset. I have a new and good notebook and I installed SL on it. I can log in perfectly with about 15 FPS or even more. But then after a few minutes, the FPS drops dramatically below 1 and makes SL unuseable. It's very frustrating! Does anyone knows a workaround for this problem? Thank you very much.

I have updated to the 6.14.10.4831 driver from the Dell web site. I have also done the UseOcclusion hack and used imagecfg.exe to permenantly force SL to run only on Core 1. What happens now is if I get too close to certain objects (I have not been able to identify what type) my FPS drops to zero and pretty much everything comes close to freezing up. Its pretty much the same problem "SL-User" described above. In most areas I can function with minimum draw distance. But there are apparently certain types of objects that are causing this.

I did this hack before and it worked great. Now both files have disappeared, and SL won't work.

Hey!!

I can not find this folder on my new compaq computer. I am doing SL for a job and would like it to work with my intel 965 chip because I can't change it. it will run for 5 min then stop and crash. I have a huge HD and 1.99 RAM so why is this driving me crazy! I would like it to work on my laptop so any help would be nice. I have read through the rest of the blogs and I can not seem to do anything any one suggests. I NEED HELP :) anything to get in and join my meetings for work.

Thanks for your time,
Liz

I can pay you if your advice works I am desperate!!

This change keeps disappearing!! I have changed the XML file numerous times and when I come back to the XML file next time..it is GONE. Anyone know why this doesn't stick?

Interestingly I also notice that hte Occlusion option on the Advanced menu is grayed out.

Incidently, I was getting the crashing as well as the freezeups. However, the driver Intel released on 3/17/2008 seems to have eliminated the crashing. I still drop to an almost 0 FPS, but the thing doesn't crash anymore.

Hi all... Just discovering this graphics chipset issue with running SL - I have a Lenovo R61 which has the Intel 965 Express chipset. I am having frequent crashes - often when changing clothing on my avatar! I also have the slow down problem mentioned by 'SL-User' & 'starbuckk', although I find if I TP to another location, the speed comes good again for a little while before dropping back down to an unusable level.

I looked into this hack, and found that setting to disable occlusion in 'settings.xml' was already in there! SL has already done it automatically for me! Which, of coures, means that it has not helped my crashing problems :-(

I do hope someone can find a solution to these SL on 965 chipset woes!

Hi everyone

I have the exact same problems as gking604 it runs good for a while than crashes. My print is still messed up and depending on the place I am in secondlife it can be really slow or fast. I have been in places and lasted a couple hours but busy sims I am lucky to last a few minutes. This whole thing is frustrating why doesnt secondlife look into it.

For those of you registered in SL, you may want to vote on http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7072 , which is the record asking the LL developers to do something about the Intel 965 framerate drop in SL.
